How successful is ICT integration into English language education in Malaysia?

09.01.2007 This journal article discusses the results of a qualitative study which was undertaken to find out how ICT is being utilized and integrated by English teachers in Malaysia, and to identify obstacles teachers face in utilizing ICT in the classroom.

It is widely recognized that: ICT tools have removed the time and space limitations found in traditional teaching; that integrating ICT tools in teaching can lead to increased learning competencies among students and increased opportunities for communication; that the use of ICT tools in teaching and learning has positive effects on behaviour, motivation, and communication skills; and that ICT tools can enable pupils to learn more autonomously.

Studies also show that pupils who use ICT in English language classes achieve higher scores; and that the integration of ICT tools in the teaching and learning of English serve to motivate pupils and raise self-esteem and confidence. In addition, studies suggest that the use of appropriate forms of ICT can enhance pupil interaction, verbalization and involvement in collaborative learning.

There are clearly many benefits to be gained by utilizing ICT in English language education, so why is it that teachers who have access to ICT do not always utilize it in the classroom? This article seeks to find some answers to this question by examining the extent of ICT integration into teaching and learning of the English language in Malaysia.

The article begins by describing the methodology of a study which involved semi-structured, face-to-face interviewing of 30 English language teachers in Kuala Langat District in Selangor, Malaysia. All of the teachers interviewed work at schools which have computer labs, broadband internet access and other ICT tools.

The interviews involved asking seven questions based on the following six themes:
  • Infrastructure Facilities
  • Computer Courses
  • ICT Skills of Teachers
  • ICT Integrated lessons
  • Supply of Courseware by the Ministry of Education
  • Obstacles

The responses of the teachers indicate that, in general, teachers do not utilize ICT in English-language classes, or do not utilize ICT to its full potential.

The reasons given for this are summarized as follows:
  • Inadequate infrastructure
- Computer laboratories are insufficient and poorly maintained.
- Desktop computers have archaic operating systems.
- Broadband connection erratic.
- No central database. Server shutdown after 'school hours'.
- No Learning Management System used.
- Computer facilities for teachers are limited; many PCs and Notebook computers are not functioning well.
- Laboratory coordinator lacks the ability to solve simple PC problems.
  • Lack of computer skills and training
- Many have not attended any computer course at all
- ICT skills of teachers are generally poor
- Most teachers do not know how to find the lessons and quizzes that are available on the Internet.
- Many CD-ROMs have been supplied by the Ministry of Education but they are rarely used by teachers because of lack of training in how to use them and lack of time by teachers to learn how to use them.
  • Teachers have a heavy administrative burden (many tasks are still performed manually) and lack the time required to learn new ICT skills.
  • Some teachers have a negative attitude towards ICT.
  • Poor support from school administrators.

The article concludes by discussing the responses of the teachers and the difficulties they face in utilizing ICT effectively; and makes suggestions regarding addressing the obstacles to the use of ICT in English language education.
